It's been a long time, been a long time...

...been a long, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely time... <big "drum solo" finish>

More precisely, it's been a long time since I've posted anything. Holy crap. I know, I know... yes, PF, you always seem to be crazy busy. And yes, my plans always seem to go wayward with regards to planning... doubly so during the summer. I'm gonna say it: I need a little breathing room here universe, I've been running full out for too many years now (often, it seems as though people beat on me with metaphorical sticks as I go) and I need to take stock of where I am. But, no time right now, gotta move, there's so much to be done this weekend!
The three, no four, errr five, fuck it... some of the things on my plate over the next couple of days are: write two short essays (I've been totally writer's blocked on them, sigh), put up the panelling on the wall frames I built in the basement (it will keep the cats out of most of the basement and let me put together a little music studio down there, which will both consolidate a bunch of equipment and instruments I have spread all over the house, and will free up living space that is taken up by them currently), get a computer running for my "ex" (it's been sitting in my living room for months), redo the setup of the kitchen (it's mostly done and I'm happy with how it's turning out... I picked up a table that folds in the middle along its long axis that I've put against the wall opposite the fridge and have moved appliances, condiments, etc. onto it and freed up an entire counter for actual food preparation... the lack of working space has been driving me nuts), read a bunch of articles for classes Monday and Tuesday (I have to pick up my textbook on Monday for the 3rd year feminism class I just started called Gender and Health), put together my daughter's desk that we picked up a couple of weekends ago (she finally cleaned enough of her room that I can assemble it... sigh, teenagers), and put together my radio show for Wednesday as I will have on a guest from Germany (the physicist who came over from DESY to assemble and commission our particle beam "pixel telescope" ... he's a pretty hoopy frood who knows where his towel's at). Oh, and I need to prepare to be interviewed on Monday (July 8th) at 12:05 (noon) on the new show Femme Fatale regarding my views on feminism, from a male perspective (sorry, no link yet, I'll post one after the show has aired... if you want to listen, it's 93.1FM in the Ottawa/Gatineau region, and streaming live globally at www.ckcufm.com... right after the BBC news).
One fun thing I managed to do was reconnect with an old friend of mine (from the late 80s/early 90s... we used to hang out all the time). I brought my family over to meet her family and do an Indian pot luck (we'd had coffee together a few weeks back and it was like it'd just been a few days since we'd last seen each other, not decades... we still connected that easily). The catch is that she and her family have several food-related limitations. When I knew her way back when, she was vegan and ran a vegan catering service. She had moved away from veganism, but is pretty much back at it now. She also can't eat gluten, or soy. Wow... I thought it would be impossible to cook anything, but a little creativity later and everything I did fit the bill. Specifically, I made a fruit and nut pullao (a rice dish... I had to find a non-soy vegan margarine since butter was one of the key flavours/textures in the recipe I based it on... I found it in my regular grocery store, wow), tarka dhal (the tarka is just a tomato/onion/spices/oil vegetable topping to put on the dhal for flavour), and an amazing vegetable curry. The recipe I based it on is this one: Slow Cooker Vegetable Curry with Chickpeas. I substituted 1/2 cup of organic vegetable stock (purchased, not made myself) in place of the chicken stock in the recipe, and added quite a bit more cumin seeds and a bit more curry powder and turmeric to it. The cauliflower and Brussels sprouts went together really well and I will definitely make this again (we're still eating leftovers, heh, it's great)!
Okay, enough about me... how about we blow your mind for 7:06 (I'm good, mine's already blown by this)... okay Zepparella, show us how it's done! The drummer... seriously... holy fuck, she makes it work!
As you may or may not know, I'm a huge fan of Juana Molina (from Argentina) and Josie Charlwood (from the UK), both of whom do live looping, amongst other things... I was just sent this video by Kimbra (from my friend Lilith) where she does live looping as well... what an amazing vocalist, and her ability to stagger rhythms and beats blows me away!
Okay, off to get some shit done!
