tl;dr A list of "one a day" (-ish) songs I posted on social media in May 2026, each with a short description included below. There is also a YouTube playlist link to listen to them all easily. I am doing this to share exceptional music and/or music videos in hopes you will find something "new to you" that you'll like.

Since I pulled all my stuff down from YouTube in response to the threats they were making to users of ad-blocking technology, and had recently left all the servers I was in on Discord due to their deeply concerning and dangerous business practices that had come to light, I had no place left to share my musical finds and interests. To that end, in March 2026, I started posting one music video a day on the social media platforms I'm still on (Bluesky, Spoutible, Hey.Cafe).

For convenience, I have started creating a monthly playlist on YouTube (just a playlist, no new content from me) and plan to make it public early in the following month. I will post the itemized list of songs here as well because YouTube is not a stable hosting platform (in the sense that videos are often removed so the lists break over time). There's no particular rhyme or reason (much less musical era or genre) that I'm following, it's what I felt like posting that particular day. I seem to be favouring new music (because I find it hard to find good new music), but I definitely post older stuff as well. Here is the list of songs, in order of posting, including any comments I made (again, since social media platforms are not very good repositories of information, and old posts are effectively gone because "ain't nobody got time to scroll back without very good reason"):

05/01 Simon Phillips - Andromeda

Dropped six hours ago as I am posting (early today, heh). I *loved* this!!! Super groovy and entertaining jazz music performed live in studio (it's a delight to see the musicians vibing with each other). The talent is off the scale! From their upcoming album "Protocol 6".

05/02 Carpenter Brut - TURBO KILLER (Directed by Seth Ickerman)

On Friday, a flow artist on Twitch (hoops/fans) requested music. This was one of the songs I suggested (the album version) and she did an amazing performance to it. The music and video is wastefully stylish and needlessly epic (French, but looks Italian, imo).

05/03 Mortemia feat. Leah - Wicked Game (Chris Isaac Cover)

Today's music is by the solo Norwegian gothic metal band Mortemia (Morten Veland) who's been doing a series of collaborations with female metal vocalists on cover songs. Nothing can beat the original, but this is a serviceable and respectful orchestral metal (?) version of it.

05/04 Mink DeVille - Italian Shoes (1985)

I had hoped to work on some mechanical designs tonight, but I am missing critical information that I will have to get tomorrow when I'm back in the lab. Sigh. Instead, here's a cursed music post for today, from 1985 (video synced to album track, the song keeps going after the video is done, fyi). "Soft like buttah, fit like a glove...". A bop, but my goodness...

05/05 Rujen - Psychic Sister / Spider Silk

Some modern psychedelia for today's music choice... In two acts. A chill and easy listen; with a fun, trippy, and entertaining video. "Rujen is a five-piece space rock outfit from Atlanta, USA"... this seems to be their only video.

05/06 MadMadMad - Overload

Why does Wednesday have a "D"? A very silly (but funky) song and video... I'm such a slut for vocoder though (always have been). They claim on their site: "in an effort to reduce digital pollution, the website fits on a 1.44MB floppy disk." I love this! Our digital world is so insanely bloated, and every byte transferred costs energy and contributes to the heat death of the universe (for real, it increases the entropy in the universe).

05/07 Chet Faker - Gold

Ah, a frost warning tonight in The City That Fun Forgot... time to share some hot music from Australia to keep warm. A sultry song, amazing dancers, and an enigmatic video that leaves many questions about what exactly happened. Are they valkyries coming to decide?

05/08 Jazzanova - Mwela, Mwela (Here I Am)

Today's music is one of my favourite tracks... in glorious 360p (it's an old video, I wish there was a higher resolution version). Vocalist Valerie Etienne with the Berlin based DJ/producer collective Jazzonova off their 2002 debut album.

05/09 Submotion Orchestra - Passed Me By

"Submotion Orchestra are a seven piece band formed in 2009 in Leeds influenced by dubstep, soul, ambient electronica, jazz, and dub." Not sure this 100% works (maybe 80%, let me know), but it's an intriguing composition and performance and I enjoyed it.

05/10 Mean Mary - Iron Horse

Mean Mary got her nickname when she was 6 and performed a song "Mean Mary from Alabam" on a local TV station. It stuck. From all accounts, she's not mean. A beast on the banjo and an amazing singer/songwriter.

05/11 Vladimir Cauchemar - Aulos

Fell asleep early, up a bit before sleeping again. Monday's music was described by someone I know as what their ADHD-addled brain does when they are trying to focus on a task. Cauchemar is "a French DJ, composer, and record producer." Note: "cauchemar" is French for nightmare.

05/12 (1/2) David Bowie - I'm Afraid of Americans

Today is a twofer. Part 1 of 2: this speaks of the USA that we see on the global stage, and the terror that we might be targeted next as their collective society irrationally lashes out in fear and insecurity at living in a complex world.

05/12 (2/2) Karolina Kozak - I Tak Bez Konca

Part 2 of 2 speaks of the USA that we see when we deal with its folks individually. There's so much love and community to be found. People are just people everywhere doing their best. Polish musician, video shot in Savannah, Georgia. Verklempt every time. 🥺

05/13 Fever The Ghost - Source

Here's Wednesday's music post finally (I am so far behind on everything in my life right now). A truly delightful and strange animated video by Felix Colgrave for this delightful and strange song off Fever the Ghost's 2014 debut EP. I love the little dancing "bean people". 😍

05/14 Zepparella - When The Levee Breaks (Led Zeppelin Version Cover)

For Thursday's music I present the all female Zepparella absolutely crushing Led Zeppelin's cover of the classic 1929 country blues song by Kansas Joe McCoy and Memphis Minnie. Confession: I have a rare celebrity crush on the drummer, heh. She's a beast with those sticks!

05/15 Eartheater - Paradise Rains

I was going to post Parov Stelar's latest, but it seems he uses AI in his music and videos these days. So, no. In it's place I present the latest from Eartheater (Alexandra Drewchin), currently based in NYC. Absolutely cinematic, filmed in Latvia, dark and moody, unsettling.

05/16 Shearwater - Daydream Unbeliever

Today's music and video is ... sublime. Filmed in Antarctica on scientific expedition PS152 by the band's leader Jonathan Meiburg, a multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter out of Austin, Texas. No AI was used in the making of the video. Gorgeous in every dimension. ❤️

05/17 Ibeyi - Aset

Today, I bring you joy and dance and community. Off the French duo Ibeyi's (Yoruba for "twins") upcoming album "Offerings". English, French, Spanish, and Yoruba lyrics in a fusion of jazz, beats, samples, and traditional instruments. A wonderful find! "Lisa, the lead singer, plays the piano; and Naomi plays the traditional Peruvian/Cuban percussion instruments cajón and Batá drum."

05/18 Crumb - Locket

Just did a 9 hour livestream to finish the 3 mechanical designs I needed to finish for my laser experiments. CAD files and drawings are all done. Time to sleep a couple of hours. Meanwhile, here is Monday's music video. Creative, inclusive, cozy, trippy, and cat in a backpack.

05/19 Earthside - A Dying Star

Out of Connecticut in the USA, not sure what to say about this except it's super satisfying for me to listen to... makes my brain go brrr. Prog, metal, ambient, noise, fusion, stuff, thing.

05/20 Elderbrook with Bob Moses - Inner Light

Well, I couldn't do any better than this myself... So for Wednesday's music post, this is it. An absolutely delightful song and amazing video (thanks so much to dagnamit on Bluesky for sharing it)! Elderbrook is a musician and DJ out of the UK, and Bob Moses is a west coast Canadian electronic music duo.

05/21 Sleep Party People - I'm Not Human At All

Today's music is ... very strange. On the surface, this sounds depressing af, but for some reason listening to this gives me hope and brings me happiness and comfort. This band is just Brian Batz out of Denmark, with friends, but they play together so well. Performed live.

05/22 MÖNG - Ohilen

A treat for your ears for the weekend! MÖNG is a French duo, Lily Noroozi and Isao Bredel Samson, bringing together a mix of electronic and traditional music from around the world.

05/23 The Supermen Lovers feat. Mani Hoffman - Starlight

Here's an oldie (25 years ago!) but a goodie that will get you dancing to the music (if you're inclined to do such things). Quirky and weird and fun, the video is its own short story. Staying in France, this is the project of electronic musician and producer Guillaume Atlan.

05/24 (1/2) Philiminizzy Reacts - Reaction to Freeze The Fall's Cover of Aurora's "The Seed"

Something different part 1 of 2. I shared this amazing cover 04/09. Apparently I'm not alone in thinking it's exceptional. I don't watch reaction videos much anymore (they're usually vapid and formulaic), but this guy from Ghana really gets how this is the yang to Aurora's yin.

05/24 (2/2) Deadgrl Superstar - Reaction to Freeze The Fall's Cover of Aurora's "The Seed"

Something different part 2 of 2. I shared this amazing cover 04/09. Apparently I'm not alone in thinking it's exceptional. I don't watch reaction videos much anymore... but while I found this streamer annoying in some ways, her actual reaction during proves how hard it can hit.

05/25 Dr. No - Light

I used to do an FM radio show where I would buy stuff from "dollar bins" at record stores (mostly by bands I didn't know, $3 or less), listen at home, then put a show together around the music I had found. This album from Poland was one of them, and it's still a favourite!

05/26 Jamie xx - Gosh

Today's music and video makes me feel catastrophically lonely and isolated, but it is also profoundly beautiful and powerful. No AI or CGI was used. If you had been there in person, this is what you would have seen before you too. Breathtaking.

05/27 GUNSHIP feat. Kat Von D - Black Blood Red Kiss

Part 1 of 2 for this music post. Part 2 is Friday (a cover) and this is the original so I wanted it to sit for a bit before then. Gunship is an odd band but when they shine, they're shockingly brilliant imo. I have rarely heard a song that holds tension this well. I didn't know who Von D was before hearing this (and quickly found out she is a polarizing figure). It works for this song though...

05/28 Modeselektor feat. Miss Platnum - Berlin

One of the most creative and amusing music videos I've seen, and an absolute bop of a song. The video director wrote to Modeselektor asking them to play at their wedding (not expecting an answer). The band right then needed a video made for their new song. A pact was struck!

05/29 GUNSHIP - Black Blood Red Kiss (Choir Noir Remix)

Part 2 of 2 for 05/27 music post. Part 1 was Wednesday (the OG) and this is a cover commissioned by Gunship. Performed during a Covid lockdown with everyone at their homes. I can't describe how beautiful I find this, but seeing such diverse folks coming together gives me so much hope and joy.

05/30 Austra - Fallen Cloud

Just got back from the lab. One more day to finish gathering and making plots with all the data for my presentation in Quebec City... Tuesday. Saw her in concert last year, a unique talent!

05/31 Pentangle - Open the Door

Here's music for the last day of May. Just a lovely song, no video today (well, yesterday). A band I've never seen live (I have seen Steeleye Span and Fairport Convention in Toronto though).

Choir? Opera? Hardcore metal? Classical instruments? Must be music by French musician Igorrr (Gautier Serre)! Definitely one of my favourite artists these days. Intensity 11/10 and so creative! A truly unique artist. Dropped a couple of months ago, off his 2025 album "Amen".

04/04 Men Without Hats - I Sing Last

An emotional song for me that I feel is super relevant today by a criminally underrated band. I have listened to this version and album version hundreds of times. A live performance off their "Live Hats! Freeways Tour" DVD from 1985. ❤️💔

04/05 Boris Blank - Angel Base

A beautiful piece by Boris Blank (one half of the Swiss band Yello... you know, the "Oh yeah" band?). Atmospheric and evocative, and bringing to the table his renowned audio design, this is a side of Blank we don't always get to hear.

04/06 Faux Tales - Pulses

Dropped four days ago, this is a lovely solo electronica music performance with piano and synthesizers in a gorgeous location (the Maurerhalle Basel in Switzerland) by Swiss artist Timo Loosli as Faux Tales (cello added in post).

04/07 Men Without Hats - Pop Goes The World

Today's music choice seemed appropriate for the way things are going these days.

04/08 Lemoncello - Articulate Animal

It's not "tomorrow" until you've been able to sleep, right? So, here's Wednesday's music post. 🙃 A wonderfully unique indie/folk experimental sensibility from this Dublin-based duo off their upcoming album. Made me happy. Video shot at a community centre. Simple and effective.

04/09 Pinkard and Bowden - I Lobster And Never Flounder

I was watching Feyincarnate livestreaming Stardew Valley on Twitch and she was sent on a quest for a lobster. It, unfortunately, reminded me of this very stupid song. It is now today's music drop. I am deeply sorry. "I lost her and never found her".

04/09 Freeze the Fall - The Seed (Aurora Cover)

Well, it's a twofer day. Out of Kelowna, BC. Streamer SallyWallick on Twitch (who I watch, she does improvisational live looping) is a music teacher and encouraged them in their endeavours (from what I understand). They're all 17/18 and attempting an Aurora cover has destroyed many... but they did it metal af.

04/10 Yussef Kamaal - Calligraphy (Brownswood Basement Session)

This live (in studio) music performance takes my breath away every time I watch it. Yussef Days' drumming has to be seen to be believed... I'm always amazed he doesn't just fly apart at the seams as he plays those impossible riffs. Jawdropping skill and determination.

04/11 Chassol - Rude Crude Lude

This was *not* what I expected. Absolutely brilliant, playful, and skilled music and video. What an incredible vibe! "Christophe Chassol is a French composer, pianist, arranger, and musical director known for combining voices and environmental sound with musical composition."

04/12 Good Kid - Cicada

From Toronto... fun, upbeat music. On tour in Canada, the USA, and Europe this year. Great animated music video (video credits below the video, a big production)! "All Good Kid music is DMCA free and Content ID free" for you to use in your work, on Twitch, and on YouTube!

04/13 Marmozets - Cut Back

Dropped 3 days ago... I think I really like this UK band's music and vibe. Is this song power pop? Pop punk? Just a bop whatever it is? I like the chiptune motif as well. Super energetic video. The vocals manage to match that energy!

04/14 Supreme Beings of Leisure - Never the Same

Far throwback music video. Before we had broadband Internet (talking dial-up speeds), this video was created using Flash animation and would play as data in your browser's Flash plugin or a standalone Flash player. This is a video rendering of the Flash file. I love the song!

04/15 Pigeon - Mirror Test

Really not sure what's happening here, but I really like this music and this super fun bop with its silly and weird (and kind of adorable) video. It's rare to hear something fresh and these folks deliver. Out of Margate, UK and Conakry, Guinea. All their stuff is so creative.

04/17 Herbie Hancock – Footprints (Live Jazz Day 2023 All-Star Performance)

Thursday's music is a little live Herbie Hancock. A true modern jazz master. Top tier musicians grooving along with him.

04/18 Gnome - Wenceslas

I've realized I have enough music posted already that I can't remember everything I've posted (not an issue for new music, but for some older stuff mostly). But here's a favourite from the last few years. Very silly but super fun. Out of Belgium. Their guitar lessons rock too.

04/19 Modern Woman - Neptune Girl

Off their upcoming debut album Johnny's Dreamworld. A lilting indie song that "explores the strange poetry buried within the ordinary". An engaging claymation video by London-based director and animator Joseph Brett.

04/20 Antoine Baril - One Man RUSH (Medley)

Ready to have your noodle baked? An instrumental medley of Rush songs played by one person. All the parts (multitracked). Using some of the same instruments Rush did. In his Quebec basement studio. Filmed live performing the parts you hear. Strings, drums, keyboards. 🤯 ❤️

04/21 Jena Malone - Barstow

‪An unusual choice for today's music: Actress Jena Malone (Sucker Punch, Hunger Games, ...), is releasing her first solo album next month. I'm not usually a big fan of heavy voice effects, but here it is used to artistic outcome. The video is predictably beautifully cinematic.

04/22 Puscifer – Apocalyptical

Today's music is a video released during the pandemic lockdown (if that's not obvious); however the song was recorded in 2019. Love this band and this is one of my favourite songs and videos by them. Watch to the end for a true cultural moment of the plague times...

04/23 Odesza - The Last Goodbye (feat. Bettye LaVette)

Today's post is is by the electronic music duo Odesza. I think this is the best song they've done. It features vocal samples by the amazing American soul singer-songwriter Bettye LaVette from her 1965 song "Let Me Down Easy". The jaw dropping visualizer is by Woosung Kang.

04/24 Clown Core - Hell

Today's mood music ... they use their amazing powers for evil (granted, they *are* clowns though...). The only parking lot porta-potty avant-garde jazzmetal live video I know of. Truly talented, but perhaps in a misdirected way, lol. I am concerned that I really like this.

04/25 Igorrr - Cheval

‪If you ever wondered what my brain would sound like if it were music ... this is exactly it. True story. Igorrr (Gautier Serre), out of France... truly one of the most unique music projects these days. The talent on display is next level.

04/26 Du Blonde and Samuel T. Herring - Pelican Canyon

This song always makes me emotional. There's an innocence, wonder, and honesty on display in this music with its "home video" that they shot after meeting for the first time and embarking on a cross-country trip from Baltimore to LA together. The song was recorded in one take.

04/27 Die Spitz - Riding With My Girls

Today's music post goes hard with one of my favourite bands lately. Out of Austin, Texas they somehow have something of a European vibe about them. "The real, explosive deal, unleashing some of the best rock and roll that Gen Z has to offer." Not a polite band or video. 🙂

04/28 MC 900 Ft. Jesus - If I Only Had A Brain

Crashed hard (fell asleep) at 8PM, so I am going to retroactively declare this Tuesday's music post. A classically trained musician out of Texas, he was active in the early 1990s before giving up on the music industry. I love this smart song and silly video.

04/29 Moon Radio - Shangri-La

Before I fall asleep again, here is today's music post. Smooth jazzy vibes, hints of flamenco, dreamy vocals, and ... video game arcades. "A lush collaboration between native New Yorker, singer-songwriter Julia Haltigan, and Japanese vibraphone wizard Yusuke Yamamoto".

04/30 Pearl and The Oysters - Doom Mood

It's time to join Gir and sing The Doom Song! A little more lounge though, heh. Very 80s looking video too (dropped yesterday). "Originated in Paris, later relocated to the US. Their music blends elements of indie pop, synth-pop, dream pop, and 1960s/70s-inspired sounds."

Since I am no longer on Discord, I've no place to share my music finds. I'm going to be starting a series of one song a day so I am no longer sad I can't share things. It'll mostly be videos, sometimes not if there isn't one, often new music, sometimes older. Any and all genres.

03/04 Ditonellapiaga - Che Fastidio!

Today's music, out of Italy. "How annoying!". Off of her upcoming (third) album "Miss Italia". It was her entry into the Sanremo Music Festival this year and took third place.

03/05 Squarepusher - K2 Central

Off their upcoming (14th?) album Kammerkonzert, a delicious jazz fusion vibe to tickle your ears and make your brain go brrr.

03/06 Marmozets - New York

Out of the UK. Off their upcoming (third) album CO.WAR.DICE, a classic punk pop send up in celebration of the eccentricity of New York City.

03/07 Shireen - Cloudweaver

Annicke Shireen brings her unique witch rock style out of the Netherlands. Characterized by intense vocals and musical drive, her videos are cinematic and evocative.

03/08 L'Rain - Pet Rock

Today's music post (by Taja Cheek as L'Rain, 2023, out of New York). Song is interesting (very dreamy and experimental) and the video is a lot of fun, featuring miniatures of furniture and instruments and stuff in a little house, with little rocks.

03/10 The Dø - The Wicked And The Blind

The Finish-French duo (band name pronounces like "deux"). Not super into a lot of their stuff, but this song is a lyrical and musical masterpiece. From a while back, but it's a song about cults and cult mentality, which is now mainstream and utterly toxic.

03/11 Salade De Bruit - Le Céleri

Out of Bordeaux, France. "Noise Salad - The Celery". Super fun high energy instrumental funk with a silly but very well produced video of the band as frustrated chefs (with bloopers at the end).

03/12 Oranssi Pazuzu - Muuntautuja

CW: very flashing lights, demonic chanting, hooded figures, skulls, drum and bass. (heh on the last four, for real on the first) Goes industrial more towards the end. Super lo-fi glitchy video I thought was effective.

03/13 Tycho - Forge

One of my favourite 2025 tracks. Not the kind of vocals I tend to like, but there's something about the progression and energy that makes this special. Out of the UK (she's from Estonia), they were roommates during the pandemic lockdown and this happened.

A song I've had on heavy rotation this year (when I first heard it). She's a Welsh artist known for releasing albums entirely in Cornish (this is English). The lyrics reflect her experiences when young, but it's the chorus and musical swells that captivate.

Lilting and jazzy for today's music choice, dropped yesterday. Out of the UK, she is a "saxaphonist, singer-songwriter, electronic producer, and field recordist". She plays the rocks on a hill as part of this song. Shot on 16mm film.

The delightful musical phrases and progressions work with her voice to bring a deeply chill and satisfying vibe. Franco-American from France, she comes from a jazz music business family.

A music video masterpiece — one of the best I've ever seen for its production, acting, and impact. Seeped in dread even though nothing actually bad happens, it just portrays a deeply unsettling vision of a changed world. Out of Brazil, his albums are so lush.

I realllly liked this. Minimalist electronic music and simple beats that is filled to the brim with luscious vocals. Queer and out of LA, LANNDS is "a dreamy, psychedelic take on electro-pop". Simple and fun video for it as well.

‪Going back a decade with one of the most cursed #music videos ever made. CW: contains scenes of idiotic action/violence. American DJ and producer who has worked with a who's who of hit makers.

03/25 Ed O'Brien - Blue Morpho

Beautiful new music from Ed O'Brien (of Radiohead). If you need to feel better about our world, this song delivers. The video was made with layered live video recordings (some shot with a drone). I needed this, I'm so weary from all the war, hate, and fear.

Going to stay with beautiful music for today's post (dropped yesterday). Need it for my soul. Composer and multi-instrumentalist performer out of the UK, this instrumental is off her upcoming sixth album 'Liminal'.

Released a couple of months back. Super fun and cheesy video (with practical effects!) for this prog rock bop. It's always fun when bands let their nerd flag fly proud. Off their third album (of the same name), which came out last month. From New Zealand.

Today we get an entertaining bop from disco/funk band Say She She out of Brooklyn. The singers are all classically trained and tour and record with a backing band. I find it a bit repetitive, but it's still a fun groove.

Technology and Society: Forecasting Currency

Signs my brain is healing a bit from SARS-CoV-2 damage, I had an essay that I lost the original files for but wanted to share (it's probably in a compressed archive somewhere, or it could legit be lost), and finally figured out how to deal with it. It has been floating around in my "to do" list for years... the paper getting shuffled from one despair pile to another over and over again. I found it again when I was moving some papers today and did another search for the original... nothing... what to do to get it "out of my to do list"? I've been staring at the thing for years and finally today it occurred to me: scan it into a PDF and run OCR on it, then edit the text file and publish it on my blog (like the other essays I've shared). I use a program called PDF Studio because it allows me to edit PDFs (fuck you Adobe, seriously fuck you, you suck) and I remembered it had an OCR option. Scan. OCR. Save PDF (with text). Save as TXT. Edit. Save. Format in HTML. Publish. It is now off my do-to list, and is here to read if you are so inclined. It's from a course called "Technology and Society: Forecasting" and I wrote about the future of "currency" (cash, monies) in an age of "mixed reality" technologies (AR/VR/etc.). The goal was to take a 25 year horizon and speculate on what it would look like (2041 in my case here, the course was in 2016). It was overall a group project and we made a group presentation, but each of us had to submit an individual essay that we did on our own.

Technology and Society: Forecasting Currency
Rather than focus on a specific area of endeavour, our group chose to look at how currency could be impacted by mixed reality over the next 25 years. Currency touches every aspect of human existence, and with the continued assault of global hypercapitalism, neoliberalism, and renewed colonialism on several fronts, there is no reason to suspect that its importance to our day-to-day lives will not continue to increase and pervade every corner of our existence. The question then is, in what way will mixed reality technologies impact the way that currency operates, and perhaps even what it is in 2041 and beyond? All indications are that mixed reality will become entwined with, and in many cases drive, what future societies consider to be “value”. While 25 years is not sufficient time for such a transition to take place, both most of the group and I believe the world will be at a cusp by 2041. By that point in time, traditional forms of currency will start being supplanted by gamification systems accessed through ubiquitious and varied augmented and virtual reality systems associated with the delivery of “work units” in both cyberspace and in meatspace¹.

In today’s world, currencies are created and maintained by nation states or, in the atypical experiment of the European Union, by nation states agreeing to use a common currency. For much of the history of civilization, various imperial ventures have provided common or defacto currencies to many nations for use both internally and in trade. “There are four key characteristics of [common] currencies: high unitary value; relatively low inflation rates for long periods; issuance by major economic and trading powers; and spontaneous, as opposed to planned, adoption internationally” (Lothian & Dwyer, 2002). In 2016, the major common currencies used are the US Dollar and the European Euro, but with the computerization of commerce, nearly all national currencies are given the same weight (if not the same value) when conducting online transactions. In meatspace commercial transactions, the local national currency is usually universally accepted, along with at least one of the world’s common currencies, if not both — but not all national currencies, if any others. It should be noted that when a nation is going through particular financial turmoil, sometimes that national currency is shunned in favour of common currencies which have a more stable value. It is interesting to note that credit or charge cards (e.g. Visa, American Express, etc.) are accepted for meatspace transactions around the world, and that they do any necessary real-time conversion between the local currency and the currency of the purchaser, whatever it might be. From that perspective, electronic transactions of this sort could be considered a primitive form of augmented reality, where traditional trading mechanisms have been augmented by ubiquitous networked computer systems from the point-of-sale terminal to the server rooms of the card companies. However, the value of currency depends where you are living in the world: the money received for any particular “unit of valuable work” depends on your socio-economic status, your gender, your ancestry, nationality, any number of ableisms, and so may other factors that do not affect the quality of your work relative to anyone else doing the same “unit of valuable work”. For some tasks, geographic location will remain a critical factor in performing the job — i.e. fixing a broken faucet in your house, or digging up a turnip — but increasingly, manufacturing, farming, diagnostic and repair functions, and even services such as the preparation and delivery of food will continue to require fewer humans to accomplish. Either society will continue on its trajectory of maintaining a permanent underclass that provides labour to a very small ruling class (the trajectory we are on now) — unsatisfying tasks where each person in that underclass performs increasingly menial tasks — or methods will be found to reward people based on their NetWorth (the value of the work they do as viewed from a network-centric/cyberspace positionality rather than the old meatspace/racist/sexist/etc-ist positions of today).

One can argue that this process of NetWorth has been going on for decades — perhaps not in the mixed reality sense being explored here, but tasks that were once the exclusive domain of the most highly trained individuals of Western nations on precious and expensive hardware are now being done in countries like India by over 3 million trained IT professionals². Companies are still taking advantage of colonial/imperialist power structures to get comparable work out of professionals in India and other places for pennies on the dollar that would be spent in rich industrialized Western nations; however, there is an equalization process that does occur: high paying jobs in the West doing IT and software work have disappeared in favour of using outsourcing to designated resource-providing nations (human labour resources in this case). Furthermore, the existence of this outsourcing channel has encouraged management in Western countries to put downward pressure on local salaries, and to treat IT employees as disposable insourced resources. All of this undermines the long-term competitiveness of Western societies, and increased the competitiveness and skill of non-Western societies, and further equalizations will occur at the macro level globally through these economic and social pathways.

All of this is to say that the inequity of using neocolonial domination to leverage quality products for salt wages is unsustainable, and the spread of mixed reality technologies will hasten the erosion of such inequities. Sadly, it is likely going to be a huge “race to the the bottom” that will drive many Western jobs out of existence and lead to much instability; however, it will take more than 25 years for this to happen. With the disastrous and currently (politically) unstoppable climate devastation that will take place over the next 70 years (IPCC, 2014), in 25 years we will see these shifts in global power dynamics started to play out on a grander scale. This trend will be further enhanced by the continued integration of Africa into the global economy as part of the economic and political programme underway by China to undermine Western power there (Alden, 2005) and future-proof (in the medium term) its manufacturing dominance through those partnerships. The hastening of this dynamic and the equalization of compensation for work no matter where it originates will be hastened by the widespread adoption of mixed reality technologies in 2041. NetWorth will be one of the higher-order (Buschek, 2016) effects of mixed reality technologies.

Another higher-order consequence of ever more ubiquitous mixed reality technologies (e.g. smartphones to headsets to working surfaces and displays) will be a drive for the gamification of all human endeavour. Again, 25 years is not sufficient for this to have fully taken place; however, it was felt by most group members, and myself, that we will be at the cusp in 2041 where the subtle social changes brought about through mixed reality enabled gamification paradigms will start making deep inroads into the way human society functions, how work gets done, and how people are compensated for the work they do. To repeat a notion repeated several times in this class, and attributed to Simon Perry by N. Katherine Hayles and Nicholas Gessler: “Our children will not call [this technology] virtual reality. They will call it reality.” (Donovan, 2016). The Internet was a novelty (for better or worse) to adults living through the 1980s and 1990s, but those who grew up in the 1990s and later see it as part of the basic infrastructure of their houses, their schools, their workplaces, and their lives. It has gone from a luxury item to a needed resource to function effectively in the modern economies of the West (and increasingly, everywhere). The generation growing up now will see mixed reality systems as just another basic element of existence; and as the Internet has grown to be an extension of our personal identities, capabilities, and value, so will mixed reality systems and the gamification of life it will bring.

Gamification of work is nothing new (Nelson, 2012), but it is the general and widespread availability of powerful mobile computers, cloud processing and storage systems, and common communication protocols (the World Wide Web, HTTPS, HTML5, etc.) that are driving new possibilities (Dale, 2014). Once again, the missing ingredient has been how to integrate gamification into our everyday lives, and this could not be possible until mixed reality technologies begin to move out of their infancy, which again I see starting to happen in a deeply impactful way around 2041. The insinuation of gamification into both commercial and social interactions is another inevitable higher-order consequence of mixed reality systems, and was portrayed in jarring clarity in the short film Hyper-Reality “where physical and virtual realities have merged” (Matsuda, 2016). In this vision of the future, Matsuda demonstrates how the unseen protagonist of the story (we see what they see) accepts their job assignments as a fully gamified experience, with points awarded for successfully completing both actual work and the myriad administrative details and microtasks required to operate in a society that requires work of its citizens to survive. What is also interesting is that there is a gamification of the protagonist’s social life as well, where automated systems indicate that they are not performing well in that aspect of their life, and offering advice on how to “play” better. Finally, Hyper-Reality indicates a future where workers don’t receive much, if any, national currency for the work they do. In the film, the protagonist gets to keep the reward points for doing tasks for others that they can then, presumably, spend to get goods and services for themselves as in-game rewards (where “game” here is “physical existence”). Even the game-derived notion of “levelling up” is presented as an aspect of how one might operate in a mixed reality, fully gamified, future.

It is at this point, that mixed reality, gamification of reality, and currency all come together. Hyper-Reality portrays someone performing menial tasks in return for credits that can be spent for presumably real-world items (although this is not portrayed explicitly, it is implied), and also presumably for non-physical goods and services like entertainment, education, training, and administrative services (e.g. interacting with government agencies for taxation, identification, documents, etc.). What I suggest is that the tasks that people can sign on to perform in a mixed reality setting (and in a gamified environment) are going to initially be menial or unskilled ones. However, as the game systems and reality augmentation systems become more sophisticated, people will be able to “level up” and be allowed to perform tasks of increasing complexity, and requiring actual training and proficiency demonstrations to qualify to do. The nature of the training would be very dependent on the nature of the work — some could be done purely online, where some require physical environments to learn and practice specific skills (a good example would be plumbing) — and similarly the demonstration of proficiency could be done purely online for some skills (possibly reviewed by humans that would be done as part of their gamified mixed reality enabled jobs). Some skills would have to be shown physically for safety-related or tasks requiring specific skills (here, flying an aircraft comes to mind as a good example of a skill that would need to be proved in person). I focused on infrastructure work for the group project and I envisioned people starting out sweeping streets and moving up the chain of complexity to critical infrastructure if they chose to go that route, where each level achieved would grant them greater autonomy and responsibility and greater rewards. Just like in many games today, people would earn proficiency badges that would allow them to receive assignments that required that proficiency at a certain level to accomplish effectively. As long as larger jobs could be broken down into smaller tasks, each of which would be tagged with the skillset needed to do it (which is the job of project managers these days), then game systems could dynamically and spontaneously assemble work crews with all the necessary skills (including, if necessary, dedicated supervision if it could not be monitored effectively with automated systems or remote operators) to perform an ever-increasing array of infrastructure-related jobs. In turn, those who do the tasks would receive points they could redeem to reduce city taxes, to pay for electricity and water and public transportation, or redeem through trading blocks for a global array of goods and services. And here is another higher-order consequence of gamification, which is itself a higher-order consequence of ubiquitous mixed reality: financial and commercial systems, and trade in general, will follow the evolutionary path followed by software systems. Specifically, such systems began as isolated systems and were federated over time through interoperability protocols, then distributed and decentralized through network-based technologies, and finally went from being explicitly functional systems to being service-oriented architectures. Rather than currencies being tied to the nation-state system, they will diffuse over time and ultimately become service-oriented systems, and access to services will be the value that is traded rather than the generic functionality of currency as it exists today. This will enable a NetValue type compensation system.

To conclude, I hope I have shown that mixed reality has worked in the world of 2041 to allow for a new paradigm of organizing and executing all the tasks necessary to run a functional society and global trade system — which should just be starting to unfold fully by then as a new generation that grew up with it operates effortlessly within it. 25 years on, I certainly see it as a success in many ways, not the least of which is opening up the possibility for a truly service-oriented valuation and currency system, and the opportunities this will bring to motivated people and societies all over the world. The negatives are the marginalization of demographics, societies, and individuals that cannot function effectively in this mixed media gamified future (much like how ineffectiveness with the Internet is an impediment today), as well as a “race to the bottom” in terms of compensation for tasks that are no longer limited to a small number of professionals or monopolistic guilds to perform. Finally, I will state that an unknown coming to pass will be the gamification of the mitigation and restoration ofthe environmental impacts of global warming, pollution, and the Anthropocene (Borenstein, 2014) extinction event. This will provide us with a much needed common purpose where individual effort really can have a positive global impact.

Your delineation of the way currency itself will change, from the philosophy of ‘pay’ to the application, is telling. The positives are there, along with major social disruptions. It would have been interesting to hear a little more about the unknown potential consequences. How to draw text around a circle in GIMP, and 101 other reasons I hate my life.

Image->Guides->New Guide (by Percent). Place horizontal and vertical guides at 50%.
Make sure View->Snap to Guides is selected.
Using the Ellipse Select Tool:

Left click on centre of guides and hold.
Move mouse to show ellipse.
Press Ctrl + Shift to use guides as centre and make it a circle.
Position circle edge to middle of where text needs to go.
Release left mouse button.

Select->To Path to create a path.
Select->None to remove selection (path will remain in Paths tab of layers list).
Go to Paths list tab of Layers list and turn on visibility of newly created path (it will show as a red circle).
Using the Text Tool:

Select the Font, Size, Color [sic], and spacing desired.
Type in desired text (a bit away from the path is best).

Go to Layer list:

Select the layer for the text just created.
Right click and choose “Text along Path” to wrap it around circle.

If it is backwards: Edit->Undo Add Path (or Ctrl-Z). To fix direction:

Select the Flip Tool (it's in the same tool group as the Rotate Tool and other transform tools).
Click on the Transform: Paths button in the tool configuration.
Go to the Paths lists and select the path for the circle.
Click on the circle path in the image to flip its direction.
Try Step 10 again... the text should go the other way around.

Create a new layer and make sure it is selected.
Go to Paths list, right click on new text path, choose “Path to Selection”.
Choose desired foreground colour, Edit->Fill with FG Color.

The visibility of the original text layer and path for the text can be turned off.
Selecting Select->None will clean things up visually at this stage as well.
Alternately, you can just delete the original text layer and path.

Make sure new layer with text is selected:

Do Select->None (if not already done) to allow whole layer to be rotated.
Use Rotate Tool to move text to final position (make sure the Transform: layer button is selected in tool configuration).

Grab layer anywhere with left mouse button and move mouse to rotate.

Press Enter to exit the Rotate Tool mode.

Select the layer just rotated from the Layers list, right click, select “Layer to Image Size”
Repeat from Step 7 for any additional text.
